Reference is a relationship between objects in which one designates, or acts a means by which to connect or link to another object. This first object is said to refer to the second object.

The word reference is derived from Latin referre “to carry back”.

The concept of a linguistic sign is the combination of content and expression, the former which may refer to entities in the real world or refer to more abstract concepts like thought.

In academics and scholarship, a reference is a piece of information provided specifying the written work of another person used in the creation of that text. The primary purpose of a reference is to allow readers to examine the sources of the text, either for validity or to learn more about the subject.

In art a reference is the item a work is based on, such as an existing artwork or a directly observed object. Another example would be reference to samples in various musical works.

Referential Integrity is a property of data stating that all reference are valid. In the context of relational databases, it requires that a value of one attribute (column) of a relation (table) references the value of another attribute, then the referenced value must exist.
