While working in the home garden I had a thought about the aging of homes.
In England I noticed the weather gardens and homes that were typically older. They felt, despite this, appropriately weathered – the stone paths were wabi sabi-esque. A clean exterior would feel almost too clean.
In my own home, I imagine a similar trajectory to ruin – aged pathways, strained wood, overgrowth.
In the midst of this, the neighbor’s house is demolished, and replaced with a visually aberrant McMansion. I see the aging of this house as distinctly different.
In this I think of other homes, or modern structures and how they would ruin. Like what the homes would look in a hundred years time, and through the gradual replacement or retainment of facets: the replacement profile of a home made of glass.
I am not opposed to modern designs at all (though I struggle with the new neighbor’s replacement) but the profile of ruin and aging, seems different.
