NOTE

I was trying to find resources connecting threads/fabric and computation and found this book. Unfortunately, it seems unexpectedly tied with religion.

Some are audacious enough to count themselves alienated from God

And as one so audacious, I’m unsure if I will finish but I will try to extract.

Today’s youth will spend most of their adult lives of the 21st century and will take for granted what we now regard as science fiction.

By looking at nature in bits and pieces, our understanding of it can only be fragmentary, for nature is not the sum of its isolated parts. Components of ecosystems interact in ways not predictable by separate knowledge of each component.

hmm (it begins):

In the world of science, although its practitioners are first and foremost human there is no equation for emotions or things spiritual, yet it may be just those aspects that are vital to prevent this great enterprise from taking us into insurmountable difficulties.

We think of computers as recent inventions. While the silicon chip of the modern computer is recent, the roots of this technology go back long before transistors and vacuum tubes, before electricity and even before recorded history.

Now when scientists living today comprise over 90% of all scientists who have ever lived, there is tendency to think that our own generation has a virtual monopoly on this history of intelligence. In terms of population numbers there may be more “smart people” around today, but in terms of creative imagination and quality of thought many ancient cultures were fully as perceptive as our own. Their philosophers were every bit as ‘smart’ as our own.

Pebbles

A pebble is an entity. It is one of the simplest most familiar things that demonstrate an unity. A pebble marks itself off from everything else - to be itself. No two pebbles are exactly alike.

The abstraction derives from ignoring the specific shape, the peculiar coloring of any particular pebble. We pass from that physical unity, to the notion of a unit - any unit, as typified from a pebble. But that unit still constitutes a mark that makes a distinction.

All computing is based on this idea.
