I wish that I had the data about the places I put my phone. Not only because it would be useful to search there when I’ve thought I’ve lost it, but because it’s always in unique places.
Where we place our phones is interesting - particularly in a safe environment like a home or apartment. A computer is generally grounded in a place. A laptop moves around somewhat, but it still also has a kind of roots and deliberate placement.
The place we place our phones has an unconsciousness to it that makes it unique. You turn off your mind, very briefly and yet there is a record to this unconscious event (where the phone lies). It’s almost like your mind shut off there.
There is a gap in your memory, which can sometimes cause panic when you actually need your phone. I’ll retrace my steps and find it on the top of a coffee can. It’ll be on the record player top. It’s chaotic. Perhaps this is getting at why it is interesting.
Suitable locations
A flat surface is generally a feature quality of where you’ll place your phone. It will generally not be a place that requires thought, such as placing your phone in a precisely balanced point such as on a doorknob. You could do that though certainly: Devise a complicated cradle that you must fully engage with to rest your phone. It might even be best if this was a feature of the phone itself, like a small convoluted ‘tent-like’ structure that would be required to place the phone.
Will you give your phone to another person? Occasionally this will happen, but it feels like resting your phone in the care of another is something that happens during an event (i.e. I am leaping into this lake, take my phone.)
A charger, or charging location is a fixed point in space where a phone will generally rest. Still, there are moments when you feel the panic of a lost phone and many times it is just because it is charging.
Aside
What is the global average battery % state? How are certain people always low battery?
Lens Cap
The camera lens cap is just like this, perhaps even more severely due to the urgency of “getting the shot” short circuiting any cap priority. For me, almost every removal of the lens cap is met with later searching or panic.
