fantasy - magic as a single thematic criterion in marking “fantasy” (both popularly and critically) “The essence of this sort can be summed up in one
word “magic”. A fantasy … is one in which magic really works.
fantasy denotes a vague, open semantic field.
fantasy = all non-mimetic literature - science fiction
fantasy is a subset of fiction. Within this subset of fantasy do we find scifi, or does it exist outside?

similar function to belief, does faith 1) blindly believe devoid of challenging 2) choose to interrogate the strongest points, challenging itself. Does the act of 1 encroach on the sphere of another, the sum of both forming a whole.

I feel we have a system for “fantasy”, here speaking about an overarcing divorce from reality (of various sorts). This term is being duplicated within the subgenre of “fantasy” and the subgenre of science fiction. Basically coining “fantasy” as a catch all supercategory is mislabeling. My mental model has fantasy and scifi as blended, but with distinct elements and a greater category holding them (unlabeled). We can imagine a work of literature (not non fiction) as completely grounded, existing as a catalog of my day but made up completely. Inherent to all simulated is the aspect of this “super genre” of unreality.

assertions: non mimemtic readings usual require additional reading competence.

“the fantastic seems to exist at the frontier of two genres, the marvelous and the uncanny”

Cloistered, and connected. Thoughts assemble, and grow but with veins elsewhere. There is an untouched quality that is essential.

There are models which fantasy is the supercategory. Godshalk proposes 4 major subdivisions of fantasy: pure fantasy, philosophic fantasy, critical fantasy and realistic fantasy (science fiction).

I can see f/sf as “escapist” but I loathe the popular idea that this is the sole factor (maladaptive), or it is wasteful and insights while engaging with f/sf are in a vaccuum, with limited application. “Your time is better spent reading Literature or Non-fiction”

Zgorzelski proposes an alternative manner of classification, eschewing traditional “realistic” and “not realistic” divide and imposes “suprageneological” types of fiction (six) defined by certain presuppositions of “unspoken agreement” between the author and the reader concerning the stygle of reading. The first of these “mimetic fiction” refers to traditional reading of realistic literature and the last “meta-conventional” composes meta or postmodern fiction.

the full list “mimetic literature” - presuposes the recognition of order in the fictional universe. this literature “pretends the fictional universe is a copy of the phenomenal one” paramimetic literature - presupposes allegorical or metaphorical tgranslation of fictional order with phenomenal one, despite possible differences. A fictional universe is created as an allegorical/metaphorical model of some empirical relations. Antimemetic literature - this mode presupposes the correction of this faulty vision of the universe, endowing the fictional world with magicial or supernatural dimensions, thus creating a different model of reality that is presupposed to be truth. fantastic lit - provides a confrontation of its order with a different one. It presents the orders as models, stressing the strangeness of those it confronts with the known order of the phenomenal reality. exomimetic literature -
