Just finished watching Conclave (yes, inside on this sunny day).
You know what I didn’t know? All throughout I was saying in my head conclave, as in Spanish “con clave” (with key). Turns out that the actual etymology of conclave! For a locked room. I have to take this as ironic in the context of the movie.
It seems to say imposition of strict boundaries, rules and doctrine will be escaped. Rigid classification or absolutes, fail.
Enclave is a private meeting, but they found it impossible to isolate — even with a bomb going off. Then you have the slow turtles constantly getting out of their pen, the segregation, the transgressions, the intersex reveal, the breaking of the seal of the death room — It’s tough to lock a room (or you just say it’s locked, and go in anyway).
Who is the one who holds the key?
When I see people so torn like this, I feel it’s always so self-imposed, all the ritualization and heavy notes.
I liked the capable nuns the most. Such a nice release to hear their laughter at the end.
