Another development with the house next door that was demolished and is in the process of being rebuilt.

Prior to any demolition the owners removed this large oak tree out front of the house. Many birds lived there. If the new owners intended to make enemies with me from the start, this was the way to do so. It seemed indicative of a carelessness and self concern.

This tree told the seasons through the bay window. I’d have breakfast, and see the morning light filtered through the trees. Watch a squirrel scamper up the side. It felt owned by the neighborhood. The entire character of the sky changed with its loss.

So over the past couple of months the house is being built. It exists now in shell, with various tarps covering the windows that billow in the wind and sound like a sail.

I returned home and saw a bunch of birds escaping from inside, flying through the gaps in the windows in groups.

The loss of the tree was hard, and this is not a full consolation but these birds are the rightful owners of this home. I imagine them flying through the unlit wooden rooms. Perching on the exposed beams. It felt suitable they were there and it was a bird house.

Don’t get me wrong, the birds would probably do the same to us if they had the power to. They wouldn’t even notice me. Pick seed over my life. But I love to think of their hidden trajectories swirling around corridors in the house that will be, and hope they shit all over the interior.
