Gardens require boundaries and they require enclosure. This may often be achieved by the use of heavy planting, often clipped into formal shapes as hedges, but another means of achieving this is to create fences.

One of the commonest styles of fence work is known as Yosume-gaki (literally four eyed fence). This allows for a type of enclosure but also allows the eye to penetrate beyond.

Types of fences

  • ma-dake or Brushwood fences
  • yosume-gaki or horizontal bamboo spaced fences
  • teppõ -gaki or round sections of bamboo arranged in vertical sections, often used as screening fences
  • õtsu-gaki or ajiro-gaki which is woven style
  • Sode-gaki or narrow section of fences found attached to the side of buildings or teahouses that create a partial screen and interrupts view, thus creating a sense of surprise for the viewer as they approach a new view.
