Take a hole punch that has a unique shape, like a heart or star. On particular lingering leaves of late fall, use the punch to perforate it. Leave the leaf. The degree to which you make it seem artificial is up to you, but it is perhaps better to make it appear noticeable, but not so cleanly defined (make the puncture, but also an errant slit)

When someone passes they’ll see it and say “look at that, nature has left me a message in this heart. What a simple coincidence.”

I saw this decayed red leaf while walking. It was shaped like a heart. It was likely a coincidental stitch, but who knows - maybe someone deliberately made it and understood this potential before I did.
