NOTE
Watching famous films and seeing them being recorded as touchstones of the nation’s collective memory.
History vs. Collective Memory
History’s goal is to provide comprehensive, accurate and unbiased portrayal of past events. This often includes representation of multiple perspectives for an accurate account. Collective memory focuses on one social nation, group or community and thus represents the past values of this group.
Studies have found that people from different nations can have major differences in their recollections of the past
Historian David Rieff takes issue with the term “collective memory”, distinguishing between memories of people who were actually alive during the events in question, and people who only know about them from culture or media.
Pierre Lévy argues that the phenomenon of human collective intelligence undergoes a profound shift with the arrival of the internet paradigm, as it allows the vast majority of humanity to access and modify a common shared online collective memory.
retrieval interference underlies collaborative inhibition, as hearing other members’ thoughts and discussion about the topic at hand interferes with one’s own organization of thoughts and impairs memory
Forgetting
Studies have shown that information forgotten and excluded during group recall can promote the forgetting of related information compared to information unrelated to that which was excluded during group recall. Selective forgetting has been suggested to be a critical mechanism involved in the formation of collective memories and what details are ultimately included and excluded by group members.

Thought
I know certain people of retiring age who, once retired, have zero desire to instruct those coming after them of the institutional work practices (basically their role). This is because they have been so soured on the institution. On one hand maybe this destabilizing of the status quo allows new avenues of progress (should the new hire be willing to take the initiative), but I can also see how not instructing can make for a disorientating experience (with the initial days of a new job being exactly orientation.)
The accumulated body of data, information and knowledge created in the course of an organization’s existence.
Data is a figure or statistic. Information is this data but in context, such as a historical time frame. Knowledge is interpretive and predictive. Justified True Belief
Knowledge comes from Saxon word: cnaw-lec roughly, emerge-like, or an extension of existing erudition. When documented knowledge turns back to information.
Knowledge types:
- incremental: product of prior experience, so-called organic learning that builds one experience on another.
- accidental knowledge: happens unexpectedly
- innovative knowledge: is the labor of genius, it can be years for incremental knowledge to catch up.
