What interested me of this offhand comment was the weight behind a franchise. There’s a marketing momentum to it.
Let’s say that we impose a rule that a sequel can be made, and a follow up (which may be a prequel as well). It seems like this isn’t enough to stop the story from occurring. It will be made (though the marketing push provided by brand familiarity is always touted as one of the reasons why we see so many sequels).
Anyway this is what excited me. What sequels exist that masquerade as a new film? Like something where the franchise marks are all morphed or transformed but the body is there.

Fan service is one of those things that will come out of sequels. But what shape would that take in these shadow sequels?
