Listened to this linguistics podcast this morning and it was discussing “possession.” Talking possession in terms “his dog” or apostrophe ‘s’.
What comes up in discussion is something like “you have your father’s eyes” as in having eyes like him, versus actually holding his eyes. (So talking about body parts and ownership).
Said that just for introduction but the connective tissue to The Substance that I found appropriate was learning there’s a feature missing of the English language that is present in the French language. French has different rules for possession, but surprisingly (and perhaps contextually appropriately) only when referring to body parts. I don’t know French but my understanding upon reviewing this further is that idiomatically you’d say literally “I wash myself the hands” (“Je me lave les mains”) where we’d say obviously, “I wash my hands”. You aren’t using “my” as a kind of ownership of the hands, it’s just using the definite article (“the hands”).
Just a funny distinction and appropriate with the conflict in the film’s bodies.
