rel: The Art of Failure by Jesper Juul
Games, particularly board games (where the chance elements are clearly on display, i.e. rolling the dice as opposed to some randomly seeded variable) are often classified by degree of chance as part of the gameplay.
What about a game that is completely chance based? It could not be as simple a mechanic as roll a die, if your number is higher you win, but should have multiple transparent layers of chance.
The motivation of this game, would be to remove all chance, and thus derive victory in doing so. The completely reduction of chance to bow to skill, could be the win state.
A game that is fully chance based, feels like it plays itself. The player doesn’t matter. I could swap you for me, with no consequence (even this element can be chance based, such as a game where you swap your entire hand with another player.)
