Thought
Superceded theories can recapture some wonder, and if the mechanisms or observations that introduced them were sincere, and truthful, they can still be useful in tracking the development of a concept. They were ideally produced by people thinking hard on the subject, not unlike us. Most people will not fully comprehend the developments that came after. There might be an intuitive sense to it, or a persistent metaphorical kind of thought that lingers in culture.
I’m revisiting quintessence because I am curious about Vibe.
Aether is known as the fifth element, or quintessence and is the material that fills the region of the universe beyond the terrestrial sphere.
Plato mentioned of air, “there is the most translucent kind, which called by the name of aether.” Aether naturally moved in circles, and had no contrary, or unnatural motion. Celestial spheres of aether.
Aether was subtler than light, “penetrative and non-material.”
Quintessence
Quintessence was the Latinate name of the fifth element used by medieval alchemists for a medium similar or identical to that of the heavenly bodies. There was very little presence on the terrestrial sphere.
Medicinal alchemy then sought to isolate quintessence and incorporate it within medicine and elixirs. Due to quintessence’s pure and heavenly quality, it was thought that through consumption one may rid oneself of any impurities or illnesses.
Newton used the idea of aether to help match observations to strict mechanical rules of his physics (which was superseded by special relativity, and used a different concept of aether.)
One proposed model of dark energy has been named “quintessence” by its proponents, in honor of the classical element.
In 1682, Jakob Bernoulli formulated the theory that the hardness of the bodies depended on the pressure of the aether.
NOTE
Stability of Concepts unit? Aether as some constrictive force. Aether keeps the entity that is me from merging with my headphones, or is the channel where we merge.
Empyrean
Empyrean was the place in the highest heaven, which was supposed to be occupied by the element of fire, or aether in Aristotle’s natural philosophy). The word is adapted from the ancient Greek meaning “in or on fire” (pyr).
