This idea exists in many forms but something simple and understandable as an example: a vegetarian eats a meal that they genuinely enjoy, that has the guise of non-meat. They then find out there is animal product in it. And suddenly spit it out in disgust.
or similarly but differently: a man amasses wealth that he stores in a cache under a tree. A leak infiltrates the cache, turning the bills to mush. He never checks his store, but feels wealthy.
This concept of a deal breaker or a single element that is so potent, and critical that it invalidates something.
What if something underlies life in this way?
Also this related sense, You spend your life studying a scientific topic - say phlogiston theory back in the day, but even further from truth and zero linkage to things like thermodynamics. The idea is superseded. What place does your knowledge serve?
I have technical books, for versions of software that are obsolete. (Things like Y2K books are actually interesting and I’ve picked them up however.)
You serve as a discipline, believing wholly in devotion of this religion. It ends up being founded on bunk.
Stay
This is a scenario I see often: You have the option to stay with someone, or go out. You decide to go, and mention this to the person you’d otherwise spend time with. They are upset, and say they don’t want you to go. So you say “ok, I will stay” but then they say “I don’t want you to stay.” The result (staying) is the same, but because they had to explain their want of you the situation has changed.
Gift
Similarly like this you are given a gift by someone. I offer you a basketball as a forever gift, which you give to your friend. I complain and say that gift was for you, and I want it back.
Ring
Maybe another thought: Your wedding ring is secretly replaced 10 hours after the ceremony with an identical copy. You wear the identical copy for 10 years, and discover the original ring.
