I’m curious about that hypothetical list of places where I thought a film was ending.

I know from recent recollections that it’ll often happen at the wrong point. Tons of people have that experience of watching something on a laptop, they sense the film is nearing the end but shake the mouse and see they are 2/3rds in.

I wonder if you can exploit that quality in a film so everyone every ten minutes thinks the film is ending. This ends up that you get them to the point where they’ve gathered their coats and are nearly out the theater door and the music starts up again.

It also makes me wonder if it shares a quality with another trait we feel, like maybe “tension” where in a horror film there’s a time quality to tension (could you have tension without time?).

Thought

Could be that’s part of it, like we get a sense of release/relief different waves of action etc
