I wish I could find it but it’s been on my mind.
There was some large study of software project managers and they were asked how original their project was. The majority said they were making something original.
Meanwhile, with the broader view what they found was that most were not. Only a small group developed original things and presumably many were just “copying” one another, but simply being unaware of it.
It’s not as if a single project we can all focus on is being made. Even a single project is forked hundreds of times over.
(possibly bad idea, what if a tool informed them of this, and then pooled their efforts.)
Perhaps there are smaller aspects that were novel, different features that would take up a lot of time.
You see product launches and then people in the comments will say “how is this different than … I already use…” and you wonder how much product research went into it and if they were even aware of their competitors.
