In English language will anything usurp the lol? Imagine adoption of some other kind of expression of laughter online, and what that would look like. Imagine seeing that and losing the lol. Its usage, currently omnipresent, becoming a brief indicator of this early internet period.

Imagine the post-lol period, which surely will exist. Does it make you sad?

LOL definitely has less instances than lol? I’d wager.

It’s not exactly apples to apples comparing haha to lol - it seems we have adopted particular use cases for each.

It does seem that haha would have greater adoption, because haha certainly came first. haha also is geographically a little invariant? you get jajaja in Spanish.

There’s a host of language variation

• french héhé or mdr for mort de rire (dying of laughter)
• wwwww in japanese, following the first letter for laughter warau
• хахаха in russian, with x read like ‘h’
• etc

Divorce laughter from lol

I’ve also heard older people believe LOL means “lots of love” or other less accepted variants.

LOL is often completely removed from any actual laughter response.

LOL seems more connected to physical laughter than lol.

The entire project to tie an lol to actual laughter seems futile. Can a human actually type or have typing on their mind when convulsive with laughter?

I guess you could produce a constantly listening device, like an echo with Alexa but the activation word would be human laughter. Which would then be transcribed into the suitable phonetic hahas and then automatically sent to third parties.
