Title

Just cataloging examples of the Infrathin, which Duchamp stated could only be described through examples anyway.

It feels adjacent to Yugen and liminality.

  • I was at the beach at sunrise. The waves would come in and crash in front of me, their momentum carrying up the sand towards my feet. Just before the waves receded, they reached a point where they completely reflected the sun to my eyes before they were gone. It was as if the waves themselves turned to sunshine before vanishing. This liminal moment, and the burst of light felt infrathin.

I’ll also comment that in this moment it felt to me like the sun wasn’t just a single sun, but the sun’s reflection was a virtually uncountable quantity of smaller suns scattering in front of me. I could see as far as my eyes would let me, this line towards the low sun and these bright spots on the waves.

  • While on the train we stopped at a station. I saw outside these silos billowing vapor out into the cold air. I could trace the thick clouds upwards. Though at the base they were opaque, towards the very top of stacks, in this chaotic and undiscernible point they faded into nothing. Invisible to my eyes. This felt infrathin.

  • When you touch something so soft, that you cannot fully feel it. The sensation of touch is only a visible thing, confirmed by seeing your hands.

    • Maybe the infrathin is the amount you age in a day, in an hour or a minute. The nerves changing to feel less. The growth of rough hands and callouses.
  • Pierre Reverdy says “There is no love; there are only proofs of love.” Can the love be infrathin? Is love felt toward you infrathin? Love given infrathin? Future love intrathin? Past love infrathin? No love infrathin?

  • A part of the song that is there, but then not or quietly descending into nothingness where you cannot tell if it is still there (but quiet) or an after-image of sound from the memory that you imagine.

  • The physical sound of guitar strings being strum when a guitar is played through an amp at a high volume.

  • The catalyst for a conjured memory before bed.

    • Someplace between unconscious void and a panicked “I forgot to respond to her message”
  • The measure of a crack in a stone which perfectly aligns when put back together

  • Any time you perform an identical action of the following measured sort, but after some time

    • turn to the correct page in a book, even if you do exactly, the is infrathin distance from the page as you first turned to it
    • similarly, moving to a timestamp. If you move to the identical timestamp (particularly if this is done manually), all subsequent times have infrathin distances from one another, despite being numerically identical.
  • Possibly, the feeling of Fragments in the Field or a text off the page. The meaning of a worn label warning, which I call a worning.

    • Is the text meaningful? If only you had been there earlier. Does the meaning still come to you, in an infrathin way?
  • Attempts to read a book, or access text, by looking at the pages in the front edge, particularly if there’s some edge bleed, such as a worn book, where you can see different chapters or movements by vague dimensions and color variations across each pages’ also infrathin edge.

    • Maybe the page itself is infrathin to the text, and the sum of the pages and their different blemishes is a kind of macro-infrathin?
