Let’s say you are playing a game where when you die, you lose your character and all of the items you had. You have to start the character again.
All items dropped in this games have probabilities (drop rates) associated with them.
What is the difference between the time loss of these scenarios?
- You start a new character. Play for one hour and get an incredibly rare drop on a random enemy. You die immediately after.
- or, You play for one hour and lose your character. The items on this character are relatively common, or below common.
- or, You play the game for five years without dying. After grinding, you finally get the incredibly rare item to drop. You die an hour later.
The idea is that if you want to reclaim that item, it would take possibly years of effort for farming that item and the loss is centered on the probability of that drop.
