I am an atheist, and I am not convinced in the simulation meme but allow me this naïve digression:

If a philosophical super-skeptic is correct:

I’ll just for once entertain that our inability to connect with deep core knowledge and concept might be a sign of simulation, or at least a motivation towards thought that would make you think there’s some simulation/god underlying things. How we are focused on symbols and have built civilization and reality around symbols. If we cannot actually interact in any consequential, meaningful way with our environment. People believe in a deterministic universe, “press play.”

Knowledge being evasive in completeness. There is something of knowledge as we know, being some kind of seeking, reaching, leaking thing. It will find a crack that is interesting and bring out attention to it, and leak out there. Various human projects and axioms.

Reading things like Sorites paradox of the Heap or various paradoxes that underlie thought for seemingly obvious things. They are unresolved, and often unsatisfying or we are forced into increasingly complex/obtuse places. The answer of what is vague. Everything feels vague. All of our methods to communicate these things are reliant or words, or truth and various human projects or beliefs.

I feel if things were simulated, they would carry with them these limitations. It would not be a consequential 1:1 system which we could tinker with. It would not allow you to actually touch it, or actually interface with the mechanism. Parameters would be arbitrarily hard-coded so as to not exhaust resources of the super-environment.

Look at the creation of large numbers. Something about the process seems unsatisfying, as if you are algorithmically creeping towards a point, but really never actually making any progress. Despite the intended depth and magnitude, it’s superficial. This feels like the nature of a simulation, something that was inherently limited to not allow tinkering or direct access, or a resource allocation concession.

Then again, this is just simply because I don’t know very much too. Unless I knew everything, which would never happen, I’d always be thinking “we must be simulated since I can’t touch infinity” or there’s a god somewhere in those shadowy cracks.
