I’ve since independently discovered a term for something that could be a factor in this Parkinson’s Law and Law of Triviality, though I’m not sure it’s what in effect below, it gives me something to grasp. In my case, I don’t feel like I’m fooling myself. I’m actually incentivized to finish early so I can be free.
Note
I also note this, which feels related, at a later date.
If I am asked to do something out of the ordinary with work. It will normally also occur during this period.
Precisely near the end of work.
It acts like an anti-epiphany.
Something about 4 o’clock…
It has happened to me a few times so I thought it worth commenting.
At work I’ll struggle all day on something that feels like a singular goal, then blossoming off into aspects of research through documentation and sub-problems.
What happens is that some time around 4 o’clock and 5 (the times I’ll generally leave work), I’ll resolve the issue.
There are some caveats that it’s not applicable to a broader project, but say there’s a segment of code I have to design and I’m really banging my head on how to get it.
I’ll get it around 4 often.
Now what is this? Is it that my day allows for a degree of reflection and maybe even laziness? And at the end of the day I’m pressured with applying myself fully if I want to complete it?
This could be a part.
I can lose myself around 2 or 3.
Could it be that the research of the day, things surrounding the problem reach a critical mass for the type of problems I’m trying to solve around that time.
This could be a part.
I’ve wondered this behaviorally with resources. For an example, say you are playing a game, you’ll act differently when you are full health versus when your character is about to die (you’ll become more conscious of a health potion for example, maybe save it if you are limited, where if you were full health you’d use them liberally.) What do those differences make, say in the time lived of resources used, or even anxiety level?
It’s turning near 4 now as I write this in my office. I started this text fragment based on this happening right now. The solution is within grasp.
I’ve not tested it but it feels there and it is 4 o’ clock.
I failed here.
